The funeral will also be livestreamed. The events page has further information. The original story is below.
The Hells Angels Motorcycle Club wanted to honor Sonny Barger, the Oakland branch’s founder who died two weeks ago at the age of 83, with one more ride in East Oakland.
The club had requested that Barger’s funeral service be held in the Oakland Coliseum complex, a few miles away from the Foothill Boulevard clubhouse where he started what would become the international organization of outlaw motorcyclists.
It is unclear whether the former boss of a motorcycle gang will be buried in the Coliseum. The Coliseum Authority’s executive director, Henry Gardner, is to meet with his board of directors on Friday morning to examine the club’s request.
Gardner stated in a report to the board that the Hells Angels had requested to utilize the stadium parking lot for service in August, but he was waiting to hear back from authorities.
“We have been engaging with municipal authorities, including the Oakland Police Department, to determine if this event can be managed properly,” Gardner stated.
Barger was born in Modesto, moved to Oakland as a young man, co-founded the city’s section of the motorcycle club in the late 1950s, and rose to become the organization’s national president, credited with expanding it globally.

On June 29, he died of cancer at his home in Livermore. His death was revealed on his official Facebook profile, along with a statement stating that it will be “posted as soon as I die.”
“I have had a long and happy life full of experience,” the Facebook message added. “And I have the honor of being a member of such an incredible club.” Despite having a public persona for decades, I spend most of my time with my club comrades, family, and close friends.
The public persona is divisive and aggressive. In the 1960s, Barger’s Oakland Hells Angels spearheaded attacks against anti-Vietnam war, war club-backed protestors, and Angels became a police informant, passing information to Bay Area cops about the extreme Left and Black forces.
During a 1969 Altamont music event, the Hells Angels assaulted a concertgoer and stabbed a guy to death.
The Oakland Police Department was involved with the club on many occasions, including raids on Hells Angels-owned premises and participating in investigations into murders, weapons and drug trafficking, and other suspected crimes.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Barger was arrested several times on drug, weapons, assault, and murder accusations.
He spent several years as the Arizona branch president of a club before returning to the East Bay to settle in Livermore.
His 81st birthday was celebrated in the Oakland clubhouse, where the numerals 8 and 1 represent the letters H and A, as well as the numbers used by the club’s supporters.
Events at the Coliseum, which is owned by the public, do not need to be approved by the Coliseum board, which is made up of members of the Oakland City Council, the county Board of Trustees, and members selected by both government organizations.
This year, the Coliseum became yet another memorial spot. A public meeting was conducted in February for John Madden, a former Oakland Raiders coach, broadcaster, and longtime Pleasanton resident.

“We don’t want to deprive family, friends, and coworkers the right to honor Sonny Barger in a public venue,” said Supervisor Nate Miley, head of the authority’s board. “We simply want to make sure that all safeguards are done.”
